National Relaxation Day is Monday, August 15, 2016.
The merriam-webster.com defines relaxation as:
: a way to rest and enjoy yourself
: time that you spend resting and enjoying yourself
: something that you do to stop feeling nervous, worried, etc.
What does relaxation look like to you?
To me, relaxation can come in a variety of forms: cooking up my favorite meal without racing against a timeline, sitting outside on a beautiful summer day reading a book too good to put down, or honing my creative side and coloring skills while listening to classical music.
Research shows adult coloring books have proven their de-stressing powers. According to neuropsychologist Dr. Stan Rodski, coloring elicits a relaxing mindset, similar to what you would achieve through meditation. Like meditation, coloring allows us to switch off our brains from other thoughts and focus on the moment.
Coloring for adults also helps1:
- Reduce anxiety
- Activate both the analytical and creative sides of the brain
- Generate wellness and mindfulness
- Control vision and fine motor skills
- Reconnect with their inner child
